Bachmann's Light Bulb Antics

Shortly after calling any human connection to global warming "voodoo, nonsense, hokum, a hoax" Bachmann introduced a bill that shows she really means what she said.

In an attempt to rile up some sort of opposition to the overwhelming support of the recent energy legislation (more Republicans in the House voted for the bill than against it) she styles it the "Light Bulb Freedom of Choice Act", completely ignoring the litany of provisions that allow traditional bulbs for the tasks to which they are best suited.

She cites concerns over the mercury content of CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Light-bulbs), while totally ignoring that the extra energy used by a traditional bulb ends up producing more mercury pollution from our coal fired power plants where it goes directly into our atmosphere alongside many other pollutants and far more CO2.

And new "low mercury content" CFLs tip the balance further by containing about one fifth the mercury.

Finally, one of the conditions under which Bachmann's bill would not go into effect is if the transition to CFLs "will reduce overall carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent in the United States by the year 2025".

Mrs. Bachmann, the transition described in the recent energy legislation is going to save us a great deal of energy, but it's a bit unreasonable to expect us to be able to turn off half of our coal plants, with coal accounting for the bulk of our electricity in this country, just by changing a light bulb.
